Blog 10: 4 Security Tips for Your Self-Storage Unit
When you leave your belongings inside of a storage unit, you want to know that they will be safe there for as long as you need. You can personally act to increase your self-storage security by following these four tips.
1. Choose the Right Lock
Most storage units will require that you, the renter, provide your own lock. This means that you will need to decide which lock is going to be strongest to protect all of your valuables.
Locks with long chains may look like they would be effective, but they make it easier for thieves to use bolt cutters to break in and have a free-for-all with your belongings. It is better to use padlocks, cylinder locks, or disc locks. These locks don’t have room for bolt cutters to cut them off, which is an instant deterrent for thieves.
2. Pack Strategically
The way you pack your belongings within your unit can make a difference to your security. Should a thief get into your unit, they will likely be in a hurry to take whatever they can find and move onto the next storage unit. For this reason, you should pack all of your most valuable items at the back where they will be harder to access.
You can also deter thieves by packing in a deceiving manner. Put heavier items in smaller boxes so it looks like they will be lighter. Then put lighter items in large boxes so that thieves won’t have time to search through the box or enough room to take the entire package.
3. Keep Inventory
It is important that you keep track of all the belongings you are storing in your unit. Write a list of everything you have stored there and then keep that list with you or at home. Do not leave the list in your storage unit or you are leaving behind a treasure map for thieves.
4. Insure Your Belongings
It is the renter’s responsibility to make sure that their belongings are insured. Insure the items that are most valuable to you through your own insurance company. Then, should anything happen to your possessions, you can know that you will be adequately reimbursed.
